Why Windows 10 Is Essential For Nonprofits And How To Upgrade

Still holding off on upgrading to Windows 10? May I ask why? You’ve probably thought about it, but then asked yourself if it’s really worth the investment. I’m here to tell you that YES, it’s worth it.

Windows 10 Professional is the gateway to accessing the most modern computing and security tools that your nonprofit needs to be successful. With Windows 10, you can implement the latest advancements in cloud adoption, security, production, and mobility. If you haven’t already made the upgrade, now is the time to consider these benefits and take the next step in moving your nonprofit forward.

Another major reason to consider this upgrade now is because support for Windows 7 will end on January 14, 2020.

Why Windows 10?

The Best Operating System for Today’s Computing Needs:  Windows 10 is available in 3
versions – Home for home users, Professional for small and mid-sized business users, and
pro
Enterprise for larger businesses. All versions include the latest features for using tablets, touchscreens, timelines, and launching applications with the Start Menu. Tech Impact recommends that all non-profits use either Professional or Enterprise versions in order to take advantage of authentication and security features plus allow for centralized workstation management. See all of the features.

The Key to Full Cloud Migration: Many of Tech Impact’s Managed IT Support clients are using Microsoft Office 365 as their productivity and communications platform. Using Windows 10 Pro or Enterprise on the workstation allows the organization to use even more of the features, including Azure AD, Cloud Join and Intune. Adopting these features makes getting rid of the server possible, which saves the organization money.

The Cornerstone to Modern Cyber Security: Whether our clients are using Office 365, Google G Suite or other cloud applications, Windows 10 has built-in security features that protect the user and the organization’s data from being compromised. BitLocker encrypts the hard disk so that unauthorized users cannot open Windows without knowing the startup code. This keeps information safe even if the computer was lost or stolen. Windows 10 allows our Help Desk team to configure other security settings that work with cloud applications.

The Modern Way to Work: users that have upgraded to Windows 10 experience fewer issues and therefore call our Help Desk less often. That is a good thing all around but mainly for today’s computer users who are on the go and need a reliable connection to their work. We can also assist the users with new feature setup such as Virtual Desktops that make serious multi-taskers (like me) very happy.

How to Upgrade?

Tech Impact wants to help you with your upgrade. Our Account Managers and Technology Teams are focused on having all workstations upgraded by end of 2018. Here is what you need to do:

Make a plan: Seems easy enough but is often overlooked.

  • The first step is to have a full inventory of your existing workstations. Ask businesswoman-company-computer-7357your Account Manager/Technology Advisor for this report. If you are not a Tech Impact Managed IT Support client, maybe you should be. Otherwise, ask your IT professional for a report.
  • Next, decide whether your computer hardware needs to be upgraded or replaced and make the necessary budget arrangements for those purchases.
  • Then, decide on your licensing approach. For new computers, order them with Windows 10 Professional. For existing computers, decide whether it makes sense to purchase upgrade licenses from TechSoup (upgrade only works if the computer already has a “pro” version of Windows 7 or 8). Otherwise, consider going with Microsoft 365 licensing. Microsoft 365 combines Windows 10 Enterprise, Office 365 and Enterprise Mobility + Security licensing for a monthly fee. (Microsoft 365 hidden benefit – this will be the last time you have to do this major upgrade since upgrades are rolled into the subscription.) Your Tech Impact Account Manager can help with this decision.
