The (incorrect) conventional wisdom is that cloud computing is bringing its flexibility, efficacies, and cost saving potential only to large nonprofits.

The truth is, nonprofits of all size can benefit from cloud computing. Whether it is a complete computing system, a cloud based file sharing system, a constituent relationship management system, or just a cloud based email platform, there’s a cloud option that can fit the budget and needs of any nonprofit.

One could make the argument that cloud computing is actually better suited for smaller nonprofits than for larger ones. Convention wisdom (in most cases correctly) leads one to believe that smaller nonprofits are trying to do more with less. According to a study released by Nonprofit HR Solutions, 55% of nonprofits intend to use existing employees to head new programs and initiatives.

Small and large nonprofits alike are falling in love with SaaS platforms. Here a few key reasons why.

    One of the most celebrated and discussed features of the cloud is the ability to access data, information, and files anywhere there is an internet connection present. This is especially attractive if your nonprofit has agents out in the field, or several different satellite campuses across the nation.

    Instituting a cloud interface that enables all employees to work from the same interface, regardless of their location, is key to aligning an organization’s many different moving parts. All of a sudden accounting, volunteers, management, and other departments are all working from the same interface.

  2. No need for servers

    Your cloud provider will handle all of your servers for you, reducing your headache on the hardware side substantially, if not removing it completely. Additionally, you can rest assured that the servers your cloud provider is utilizing are more professionally maintained, and centralized.

    An ancillary benefit perhaps not discussed enough is the environmental impact of switching to the cloud. Because you’re using servers that are being used, you’re cutting down on the amount of computer hardware waste that’s generated, and the amount of power that is used by running a server farm.

  3. Limited need for IT staff

    Because there are no servers, installations, upgrades, backups, or standard maintenance to be done, your need for a comprehensive IT department is very limited. With simplified IT needs, your nonprofit can focus on updating software, and more targeted investing that will enable your nonprofit to accomplish its goal faster.
