ITWorks Student Spotlight - Felix Fonseca

The ITWorks class in Delaware started the Spring 2018 session this week! We sat down with one of the new students, Felix, to hear about what attracted him to technology. Eager to use this opportunity to launch his career, Felix is excited to get everything that he can from ITWorks. Read on to learn more about Felix’s story.

ITWorks: You had originally applied for the Philly program, but the applications had just closed! What about ITWorks compelled you to apply for the Delaware class and not wait until the Fall?

Felix: What had really intrigued me about this program was that you’re not obligated to help anyone, but you do it anyway. College nowadays is so much about money and not enough about getting where you need to go. So I knew that with this program being free that the people involved would be invested in my goals and my future. I’ve been interested in IT for almost my whole life, so I was willing to go anywhere I needed to be and knew I needed to make it happen now!

ITW: What made you decide to pursue technology?

F: The first time I even considered technology as my future that I can remember, I was probably 13 or 14, and my brother had an Xbox that had gotten the dreaded “rings of fire.” When I saw him trying to fix it, I noticed all the wires and pieces and gadgets; and I was hooked. Anything that I could get my hands on, I wanted to learn about it. I didn’t have a lot of internet access growing up, so I can’t necessarily tell you what everything is called just yet (that’s part of why I’m here), but I can absolutely tell you what it does.

ITW: How did you come to know about ITWorks?

F: My girlfriend’s best friend is a graduate of ITWorks from a couple of years ago. We eventually became friends as well, and she told me about this program. She has found great success in her career in the field, and encouraged me to give it a shot.

ITW: What are you hoping to get out of the program?

F: No matter what happens, this program will have been worth it because it’s giving me life skills for anywhere my future is going. I am excited to learn the ins and outs of technology, but also the professional skills and what is expected in a professional environment. Right now, I’d rate myself in technology as fairly basic because I don’t know the textbook names or processes for a lot of things. This program is going to fill in those gaps for me so that my technology skills actually mean something.

ITW: Looking ahead to after you graduate from ITWorks – where do you want to be? Is there a position or company that you want to work for?

F: I like the idea of working for a global company – Samsung and Google are at the top of my list! But I know I will probably need to work-up to that. It’s just so amazing how these businesses have become household names and are doing things that are constantly improving our world. As far as the type of role I want to pursue – I definitely want to be well versed. Right now, networking, security, and software engineering are all really interesting to me.

ITW: Anything else we should know?

F: I’m originally from Philadelphia; and not the best part of the city. My daily life was pretty rough. Our family was fortunate because we banded together with our community to create a safe place. I grew-up in a family with nine siblings which made it hard to get the things that we needed. I never felt like I looked as good as the other kids in my classes. I decided to move out of the city to the suburbs because I wanted to get my life together and build a better future for myself. All of that to say that if a city kid like myself can get this opportunity then if you’re thinking about this program – go for it!
