Courtney is excited to start classes with ITWorks today, and hopes to one day build her skills in the area of application and web development. She looks forward to the security and stability a good job in information technology can offer.

ITWorks: What have you been doing prior to starting ITWorks in regards to work and/or school?

Courtney: I attended West Chester University for a biology program for two years because I had an interest in going to medical school; however, I was questioning if that’s what I really wanted to do so I decided to put college on hold so I could figure what exactly I wanted to focus my career on. In the meantime, I’ve been working two jobs to test the waters of a different field.

ITW: How did you hear about the ITWorks program? What made you decide to apply?

C: I saw an article about another Tech Impact program, and happened upon ITWorks. It seemed like the perfect fit for me since there was no cost involved and it teaches the foundation of technology skills. I thought it would be a great place to start to learn new skills and get a job, and then I could take the newly acquired knowledge to find an area to specialize in. I’ve always been interested in computers, and I think this is a great way to turn that interest into a career.

ITW: What are you most looking forward to about the 11-week classroom portion of the program? Anything you are nervous about?

C: I’m really excited to be in a small classroom environment learning with my peers who have the same interests that I do. I’m a little nervous about meeting all of my new classmates – but I think it’s going to be great.

ITW: What are you excited about during the internship? Is there a specific experience you are hoping to walk away with?

C: I don’t really know what to expect from the internship right now, so it’s hard to say. But I’m definitely excited to meet new people in the IT field and get a taste for what I’m going to be doing for my career. It’s going to be really exciting once we find out where we have the opportunity to intern.

ITW: What do you think graduation will be like? Any anxiety about looking for a job?

C: I think there’s going to some anxiety about, “oh gosh, what’s next?” But it’s going to be so satisfying to land my first job and earn a stable income so that I can move out on my own and get a dog. I’m so excited to be able to support myself and my dreams.

ITW: What is/are your ultimate career goal(s)? Where do you want to be in the next year or two? Ten to fifteen years?

C: I think a year or two after graduation, I’d like to start diving into web development or application development. I want to take the skills I learn here and build upon them to keep moving up. Looking further ahead, ten years from now I’d like to be settled down in both my personal and professional life – living in a place that I can call home and working for a company I can see myself staying with for the next 20 to 30 years. I want to be earning enough money to take care of all my basic expenses but also have the opportunity to travel. Italy is first on my list – I want to tour the entire country!

ITW: What has been/will be the impact of ITWorks in your life?

C: Up until graduation, this program is like being at the runner’s block in a race. After that, it’s when the pistol goes off to signify the start of the race – and you won’t be able to stop me after that.

ITW: Why do you think programs like ITWorks are important? What benefits do they bring?

C: It definitely benefits people because there are so many young people who can’t afford to go to school at all. College is so expensive. Aside from that, it’s so important because traditional school is challenging. It’s good to have a place where you can learn skills for a career-type position and earn certifications to establish yourself in a non-traditional format.

ITW: After you complete the program, what is the one thing you are most excited about?

C: I’m really excited to have something to do every day in a full-time and long-term position. I want to do something with my life, and this program will allow me to do that!

ITW: What are your hobbies, unrelated to information technology?

C: I’m really into sports – everybody in my family places hockey and that’s something I love to do. I really enjoy playing basketball, too, and I’m starting on a women’s league soon.
