Inspirational Words from the Philadelphia ITWorks Graduating Class

At the Philadelphia ITWorks graduation on June 24th, graduates Maia Harris and Joe Davis delivered inspiring speeches to their classmates, friends, and families. Maia started with a story about how difficult it was to find a job:

“Before my contract ended with my previous job I started job hunting. I searched through many postings, talked to a few recruiters, and attended several job fairs. It was a challenge finding employment. Even though I had a Computer Science degree, I still lacked hands-on experience to get my foot in the door of any company.” Maia went on to tell us how she happened to run into ITWorks at one of these job fairs.

“I stopped at the Tech Impact table where I was greeted by Mike and Jessica, who were promoting the ITWorks program. They explained to me how I could earn two certifications and an internship in 16 weeks. At that moment I knew I wanted to be in the program - I mean, why would I not? What other program would invest time, funds and relationships with their own partner companies to polish you for your career in the IT Field? No other program I have heard of.”

Maia said that she has “gained fundamental PC knowledge, relationships, and professional etiquette skills, and earned both certifications as well as confidence in [her] work.” Reflecting back to March, she is “amazed at the skills [she] developed in class and applies them every day in an internship, which in turn opens doors and windows to a promising career.”

ITWorks students’ words about the program typically reflect exactly what Maia said – they gain fundamental skills and relationships, and are presented with a wealth of opportunity they never had before. Joe Davis said “In these past few months I went from having little to no knowledge of computer systems to being a fully certified technician and working on my own to pursue my next certification goal. If it wasn’t for this program, I would not have the confidence to do so. I feel like ITWorks has changed my life for the better.”

Joe also told us “I take pride in knowing I hit a lot of obstacles but, with the help of our instructors and fellow classmates, I was able to overcome them. We should all be proud for making it this far as some of my classmates know this accelerated course isn’t for everyone,” and closed with a strong message for everyone in the room. “Take action. Every story you've ever connected with, every leader you've ever admired, every puny little thing that you’ve ever accomplished is the result of taking action. You have a choice. You can either be a passive victim of circumstance or you can be the active hero of your own life. Nothing is really over until the moment you stop trying.”
