ITWorks Student Spotlight: Omar Acevedo

Omar Acevedo was already studying on his own for the CompTIA A+ certification when he stumbled upon a Reddit post about the ITWorks program. The opportunity to continue studying with the help of an instructor and classmates seemed preferable, so Omar decided to apply.

Omar’s previous experience in hospitality and customer service positions was a great start, but in a tough, post-COVID-19 job market, he wanted to develop new skills especially for in-demand careers in technology.

“The best part of the ITWorks program is the connections I’ve made with classmates, colleagues, and instructors,” says Omar. “I appreciate how passionate the instructors are about the subjects they are teaching. In fact, one of our lessons about cybersecurity really stood out and inspired me to consider pursuing a career in security.”

The ITWorks program combines classroom instruction with career counseling and an internship experience to gain real-world experience. Thanks to the program, Omar built out his resume, interviewed for, and secured a five-week interview with Silver & Blue as a Systems Analyst Intern.

Omar has already passed the first part of his CompTIA A+ certification and while he waits for part two, he is making plans to take the Net+ and Security+ certifications so he can launch a career in cybersecurity.

If you are inspired by Omar’s story, consider applying to an upcoming ITWorks semester. This free program has helped numerous young adults land jobs and build careers in the technology industry.
