As the Las Vegas ITWorks Fall 2016 session draws to a close (graduation is tomorrow, December 9th!), we wanted to take some time to thank all of our wonderful, dedicated volunteers. Without them, running our program would not be possible!
Mykaela, an ITWorks Las Vegas Fall 2016 student, gives her advice on what to expect when you're starting a new job or internship.
Walking into this program, I had no idea what to expect. I was curious and, to be honest, a bit scared. However, the life skills, in addition to the technical knowledge, have given me the confidence to face the unknown. My internship was hosted with Easter Seals of Southern Nevada. The organization’s main goal is to provide services to those with special needs within the community. As an intern, I assisted in a variety of projects - from interesting adventures like climbing in ceilings to tasks as simple as resetting a password. It was a great experience, and I am leaving with some advice I'd like to share:

The Westside School, or Las Vegas Grammar School Branch No. 1, is a registered historic place in Las Vegas. It is Las Vegas’s oldest remaining schoolhouse, built in 1923. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1979, and remains an institution of learning in Las Vegas to this day.
I started with Tech Impact as their Las Vegas ITWorks instructor in January of 2016, just in time to kick off our very first class in Las Vegas. Prior to coming onboard with ITWorks, I was a systems engineer for Sungard Financial and had been working in IT for a little over a decade.
Our Las Vegas class is kicking off their Fall session today! Students will embark on an intensive 16-week training program, gaining two IT certifications and real-life IT job experience in an internship at the tail end of the session. We sat down with new student Cynara, who loves working with computers and is excited to learn more and launch a career in information technology.
