Nonprofits exist because the community at large believes the world can be a better place. Whether they’re giving $5.00 or $500, it’s the contributions from the community that enables nonprofits to enact sweeping social change.

Whether it was because of ice buckets or responsive web design, according to blackbaud’s recent study of 4,798 nonprofits, who represent $16.2b in fundraising, charitable giving increased an impressive 2.1% in 2014.

But that’s just the beginning of the what the highly anticipated annual report had to say.

Online giving to the nonprofit sector increased increased 8.9% in 2014. While this number decreasing slightly when compared to the 13.5% increase experienced in 2013, an increase in online charitable giving can be expected to increase year-over-year until the it constitutes close to 99% of all charitable donations made in a given year.

Much of the reason is contributed to the meteoric rise in mobile, and the increased comfort level many baby boomers are no developing with giving funds over the Internet.

Here are a few of the other more interesting notes from the annual report that’s put together by blackbaud.

• The nonprofit sector to see the largest increase in charitable giving was in “Public and Society”, which saw a 9.3% increase. “Healthcare” based nonprofits saw the largest decline in charitable giving by 3.8%.

• Online giving is, and is expected to continue experiencing, rapid increases and decreases due to episodic events. The best example of which was the massive spike in online and mobile giving in the wake of the 2013 Philippines typhoon disaster.

• June and December saw the largest percentage of overall giving at 9% and 17.4% respectively.

• 15% more nonprofits received an online donation on #GivingTuesday in 2014.

• Online giving on #GivingTuesday increased 36% in 2014 when compared to 2013.

• Online giving constituted 6.7% of all fundraising in 2014.
