Philadelphia ITWorks Student Spotlight - Mara Thach

Mara5.jpgThe ITWorks Philadelphia Spring 2017 session starts today! Meet one of our new students, Mara Thach. Mara found ITWorks through a friend who successfully completed the program, and looks forward to learning the skills and gaining the experience necessary to start a career in information technology. Read on to learn more about Mara and what he hopes to accomplish during his internship and after graduation from ITWorks.

ITWorks: What have you been doing prior to starting ITWorks in regards to work and/or school?

Mara: Prior to starting the ITWorks program I have been out of school and was a full-time employee working as a valet parking attendant.

ITW: How did you hear about the ITWorks program? What made you decide to apply?

M: One of my friends actually went through the program and he told me all about the great things the program did to help him succeed. Seeing how great he was doing throughout the program, and even after, encouraged me to give it a shot as well since I was already interested in working with technology.

ITW: What are you most looking forward to about the 11-week classroom portion of the program? Anything you are nervous about?

M:  During the 11-week classroom portion I’m looking forward to learning everything possible to help me become the best I can be and to help prepare for my job after the program. I’m not nervous about anything because I know I will do great.

ITW: What are you excited about during the internship? Is there a specific experience you are hoping to walk away with?

M: During the internship, I am excited to experience all of the different situations the IT department would have to deal with throughout the day and how they would solve the problem. I’m hoping to walk away with as much knowledge as possible to complete any task needed to be done.

ITW: What do you think graduation will be like? Any anxiety about looking for a job?

M: I think graduation will be amazing and one of the greatest accomplishments of my life. I’m confident that going through with this program will help me greatly and I wouldn’t have a problem looking for a job.

ITW: What is/are your ultimate career goal(s)? Where do you want to be in the next year or two? Ten to 15 years?

M: My ultimate career goals are currently in the works. I’m just living day by day hoping I will do great in whatever I’m doing. In 10 to 15 years from now I just hope I’m in a comfortable position in my life and I am happy.

ITW: What has been/will be the impact of ITWorks in your life?

M: ITWorks will have a great impact on my life because it will get me out of a rut; out of my current situation that I’ve grown comfortable in but shouldn’t be settling for. Its helping me strive for success and I believe the program will help make that possible.

ITW: Why do you think programs like ITWorks are important? What benefits do they bring?

M: Programs like ITWorks are important because they give an opportunity to those that are striving for success but don’t have the means to afford college. The program brings hardworking and determined individuals into the IT field and connects them with companies wanting to employ the students that complete the program.

ITW: After you complete the program, what is the one thing you are most excited about?

M: Once I’ve completed the program I’m excited to apply what I’ve learned in the classroom and during the internships into my actual job.

ITW: What are your hobbies, unrelated to information technology?

M: Some of my current hobbies are collecting sneakers and working on cars.

ITW: Anything else we should know?

M: I just hope I can be the best example I can be to reflect on how great the ITWorks program is for future interested individuals.
