ITWorks Philadelphia students are graduating this week! With students earning their IT certifications and working hard in their IT internships, it is sure to be quite the celebration. Miles Williams, a student in the Philadelphia class, was looking for a way to jump into the IT field and secure a more stable career to provide for his family. We checked in with Miles to reflect on his experience and hear about what’s next – read on to learn more!
ITWorks: What had you been doing prior to starting ITWorks?
Miles: Prior to starting my journey to improving my education and experience with ITWorks, I was working for a cleaning company in downtown Philadelphia. Before that I was in Pittsburgh working and jumping from job to job trying to provide for my daughter.
ITW: What made you want to pursue the ITWorks program?
M: Once I find out about the ITWorks program, I felt like this was the perfect opportunity for me to get into the IT field. With the two certifications (Cisco IT Essentials and CompTIA A+) that you have the opportunity to earn at the end of the 4-month program, I felt like it was going to open up a lot doors to land a successful job quickly. Plus when I find out the program is free for everyone, it wasn’t a hard decision for me. Who wouldn’t want to pursue an opportunity like that?
ITW: You’ve already completed the classroom portion of the program and earned your certificates – how does it feel to have those accomplished?
M: It’s a great feeling! Once I completed the program, it was like a huge weight off my shoulders. I felt like it opened a lot of doors for me to get a great career job in information technology. And a lot people can’t say that they earned two certificates in only four months – it’s a huge sense of pride.
ITW: The internship is about halfway through at this point – where are you doing your internship? What has the experience been like there?
M: My internship is at Accenture, which is a well-known global professional services company that provides a broad range of services and solutions in strategy, consulting, digital, and technology.
The experience is great! The people I’m working with are very helpful when it comes to showing me what it’s like to work in an IT team environment, and the experience is reinforcing all of the information that I learned in the classroom.
ITW: Graduation is right around the corner. Do you have any expectations on how the job search process will be? Is there a particular niche of IT that you want to get into?
M: Well once graduation got close, I started looking for entry-level help desk positions and with the help of my two certificates the job search has been easier. The market for IT workers have been growing over the years and is still increasing every year. The help from the ITWorks team has been very important in the process as well. Down the road, I would love to get into IT security or the IT network field.
ITW: What do you think the impact of ITWorks has been in your life?
M: ITWorks changed my life! The impact that ITWorks had on me was great, from meeting different professional people, learning how to network with people, and all of the technical knowledge I’ve gained. The best part about the program would be the people; everybody is working to do better from the program director to the classmates. Once u surround yourself with positive people like those at ITWorks, your whole outlook on life will change for the better. I know mine sure has!
ITW: For those young folks in Philadelphia who are considering ITWorks, what advice would you have for them?
M: If a person is considering the program, I would just tell them that if you really have a passion for technology or if you’re just not sure how to further your career, ITWorks is the perfect match for you. This program puts people in the right direction to be successful. I feel like this was one of the greatest decisions I made in life. I promise you will never regret joining the ITWorks program; it will change your life for better!
