3 Ways To Improve Nonprofit Pinterest Marketing

There is a new up-and-comer in the social media sphere and it is called Pinterest, a virtual, interactive bulletin board where organizations and individuals can ‘pin’ their interests. It is basically a virtual board or scrapbook that allows you to organize and share things you find on the internet, with its main demographic of users being women between the ages of 25 and 44. Pinterest can be used for non-profits as a storytelling tool that can easily connect you to a large, growing demographic. However, simply posting pretty photos and videos is not the end when in comes to non-profit marketing through Pinterest. Here are some ways you can improve your Pinterest marketing strategy and better leverage your social media followers.

    1. Be specific

When you go about creating a board for your non-profit’s Pinterest page, remember to be as specific as possible about what the board will contain. Vague categories such as ‘food’ and ‘charity’ are easily passed over, but more specific titles and content will likely draw in your target demographic. Create boards for events, specific aspects of your mission and volunteer opportunities so people will have a clearer idea of what to expect from your pinning habits. For example, the Women’s Law Project Pinterest has several boards that have clearly defined topics, such as ‘Reproductive Rights,’ ‘Access to Healthcare’ and ‘Women in Sports.’ By being specific about their boards’ content, Women’s Law Project’s followers know what to expect from pins and the organization gain followers that fall within their target audience.

      2. Engage in conversation

Don’t be afraid to initiate conversations with your audience on Pinterest. Each pin has a comments section, which can be a great opportunity to engage with users pinning similar items as your non-profit. Getting a dialogue going with audience members that share similar interests can bring in more potential volunteers, customers and donors to your non-profit and spread awareness for your organization’s mission. It also gives you the opportunity to increase your reach and prompt conversation about your non-profit on a more global scale.

      3. Collaborate

Pinterest does not have to be a social media platform you have to take care of by yourself; collaborate with co-workers, team members and volunteers to continue expanding your Pinterest page. Boards allow an edit features called “Me + Contributors,” which allows more than one person to have access to and pin your non-profit’s boards. This can be especially useful for board that feature call to actions or are asking for donations; team leaders can post photos of things needed to complete charity projects or images of works in progress.

Collaborating with other members of your team will help expand your board more quickly and ultimately bring in more potential volunteers, donors and customers.
